Nerds, geeks and science fiction lovers! Behold! A book full of references that will put a smile on your face. Loved Firefly? So did James Donovan Halliday. Loved Monty Python? So did James Donovan Halliday. Loved arcade games? 80s rock? Japanese cartoons? So did James Donovan Halliday. You’re probably thinking you and James Donovan Halliday could be best friends, right? Wrong. Halliday is dead. Don’t worry, your love for all that wonderful stuff will help you on your quest finding Halliday’s Easter egg hidden in OASIS which means you’ll get his billions and control the digital world!

It sounds too good to be true and it does feel like it. After five years, no one has managed to find the first key to the first gate, until young Wade Watts does it. The race is then on and we are thrown into a whirl wind of Halliday’s childhood and power of OASIS. Ready Player One is a thrilling cyber adventure with a splash of romance and, of course, nerdy stuff. This novel is everything I wanted it to be and more. The peril may have been digital but the threat and stakes are real! My heart raced throughout, I couldn’t put it down.

If you don’t consider yourself nerdy or geeky, you’ll still adore this book. Take away the immersive video game and countless 80s references, you still have an underdog story to last the ages. Wade is a-dork-able, he’s plucky, cheeky and remarkably normal. He falls in love with a geeky gamer girl and has a kick ass wise mouthed best friend. There’s an evil cooperation that must be beaten, defeated and exposed. How does that not sound like your cup of tea? A to-the-death battle with laughs, a new favourite.
